our idea

The idea of root & vine began with one simple word: value.

In June of 2011 root & vine opened with the idea to provide guests with the highest quality products, coupled with professional service in a comfortable dining atmosphere, at the lowest price point possible. Twelve years later, we are still doing just that.

our journey

In 2010, Brian and I after hiking in our beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, drove into downtown Morganton, and sat at a patio table on the corner of King Street and West Union. Looking at the side of the 139 West Union building of the mural then of Table Rock, I said to Brian, “if we ever open a restaurant this is where it will be.”

After lots of research, planning. scraping together money, long hours of demoing and late nights repairing, lots of tears (me), a few curse words (both of us and maybe a lot), dumping our heart in the newly vacate restaurant space making it our own, we opened the doors to root & vine, June 16, 2011. It has been the most amazing journey since.

We’ve learned so much and built wonderful relationships with those we now call our root family and friends. It seems surreal to be leaving this space we love. Like a childhood home of all these first moments and family memories. Hosting bridal and baby showers, first dates (last dates), prom dates, engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions and two weddings (one planned in three days due to a hurricane). Wine dinners, beer dinners, artist receptions and pop up markets. Witnessing proposals, celebrating retirements, birthdays and everything in between. Personal celebrations. The sweet 16, dads big 7-0 and what would have been Brian’s parents 50th wedding anniversary had she been with us just five more months. Our birthdays, although spent usually working instead of dining, was still always fun as we got to see friends come in bringing birthday wishes and big hugs.

That corner became the meeting place and middle ground for families in opposite directions, or the must stop when passing through. The pop in when returning “home”.I love all this so much. I’m so grateful to have these memories here. To have all these meaningful connections. And even though we are saying goodbye to this home, we are so fortunate to be staying in the neighborhood. We are looking forward to creating more memories, flanking the opposite corner of downtown Morganton.

Our last night of service at 139 West Union will be Saturday, April 20th. If you happen to be at our current space that evening, at 10pm we invite you to grab a chair and march with us two blocks to 216 East Union to “have a seat” with us at our new location. If you are unable to join us Saturday, please share your favorite experience or memory with us on facebook. Thank you root family for 13 years at 139! We look forward to seeing you soon at our new home.

Cheers,

Aimee & Brian
